Promus Essay - Episode 02

Introduction to episode two

I have been thinking some more, tried to take a nap, I failed as my head spins around now, it spins so much that I almost spinned of the bed, flying around between the walls and the roof, when more details and ideas pop up  ;) I do hope I will be able to sleep tonight at least...  ;) I usually cool down after I write down my ideas, getting relaxed, so let's do it. But I also came up with more ideas writing this, editing this text, going up and there and everywhere, changing it, making the picture of what I wanna do better and more colorful inside my head. The result became different and now better even in my mind as it is there all this is after all, not a single drawing yet, but I do not need to rush that, as this text will explain it all to me anyway. So in my head, all this already exists in the real world, like a realistic dream or when you just left the movie after seeing a damn good film, you will think about that film for an hour or 5 hours or even 3 days and then you forget it and do more important daily stuff. Working or taking the dogs out for a walk, sit down at the altan, clearing your mind from irrelevant stuff and just enjoy life as it is? ;)

-Do you remember the film you saw 5 days ago?

-What film?  :/

I might forget this?

I better write them down so I do not forget them and share them as well in case you wanna do the same? Who knows? Maybe you wanna join me building the stuff as well? We can make how many choices we want of this stuff really. Give me a PM with Messenger, reply here or see my stuff later on or the stuff that is already there now as well?  Pekka YouTube

Do you wanna tag along?

I do live in Gothenburg so it is easiest if you live close by of the west coast of Sweden if you wanna join this adventure. I will also make videos and take pictures during this journey as well, if and when I get started with it that is. So many questions that I still need to have solved first.  :/

The 2 essays

This is a spin off from my previous post that I now call Essay 1 about building my own stuff for music and playing music, instruments, amps, mixers or whatever a musician would need.

Next episode (this one) we can call essay 2 or "Kåseri 2" in Swedish. My essay, or Pekka’s Kåserier or whatever? I did end up with a more suitable and clever name now I guess?

Promus Designs, Ideas, Dreams and Solutions

Promus? Pro-Musician or Pro-Music?

Any comments and criticism from essay 1 to be mentioned?

I did take some time or rather a long break before I publish this essay number 2, as I first wanted to see all reaction from the essay 1 in the link above and the result is 1 complains (That was a lot of no sense words) and 4 likes, and 2 positive comments, but no creative answers yet, no suggestions for solutions nor anything like that and I am still fumble around in the darkness for this ideas but let's not think about that now so lets publish this part 2 now and see if all hell breaks loose or not, maybe someone will start burning down the whole building, throwing in hand grenades into my GFs windows in to her kitchen? Well let's continue anyway, shall we? ;) Stop babbling no sense Pekka!!!!! (Who is Pekka? That is my nickname, isn't it?)  :O

Working hard

I can't wait to do anything else as I cannot focus on anything thinking about this and also this:  ;)

-Work harder and faster, d*** you!!!   :D

Is this realistic?

To make this all to happen in the reality, I repeat ones more what I said in the previous post that I need to contact 3 cities at least around here, wood-shops or workshops communities and so on, everyone that has some sort of similar activities available for hobby nutcases like myself, or that I used to be at least. I know there were plenty of similar opportunities for similar activities during evenings 30 years ago, now I do not know but I guess it hasn't changed much. I will solve this. No doubt. But I want to be able to work with this on evenings, as I am most effective then, so recording and play music while my GF is working and then we have dinner together, I go for a short nap, relaxing, building up new and explosive energies, runs away to the workshop, working my round a*s off more or less.

The guitar!!!!

Pekka you have 2 guitars and also a bass. Why do you need 1 more?
The 2 guitars I have is a cheap €200 Jackson and a £20 Nylon acoustic. Both sounds great for slow and soft playing, not made for raw speed nor metal if I wanna do metal, so I need a guitar that is able to proceed a lot of power, screaming like a cat, with as less force added to it as possible and that will be the goal. I will not know if I can use the new guitar at all for slow sensible tunes or if it will be playable at all? That will need to be validated but it does not matter as each guitar has its own life and is suitable for different styles. I need to be able to play both slow and fast and make both speeds to sound good, not just one. Speed is the goal for this guitar but the look of it will say other wise, it will look soft, but that is only a trick or imagination, and false impression. All this is stuff I do not gave a single clue about and will make it even ore interesting. If you know what you are doing, you are most likely very bored as well and think: When will this long day end so I can go home and continue have boring?

First the simple stuff. I love Paul McCartney's bass guitar , the Höffner, the look of it, so I will build an Half Acoustic guitar that looks like his bass, but not with so round box as it will require forms, stem and stuff to bend the tree right and I also want it to look homemade and a bit ugly, so the box will have 16 sharp corners, ruff, raw and odd or maybe even beautiful, well it depends on the eyes of the viewer as that is individual. If everyone thinks it looks ugly that's fine, as I will be happy anyway. It will not look like anything you have seen before and the reason for that is that before I start to make the form, which I will draw with a free hand, no tools, not a single helping tool, the result will be unique, no matter if I want it to become like that or not. The goal is that I want it to look like I made it, not bought it, not let anyone else make it from the perspective of how things should look like, only how my mind made it. I want the effect of the viewer to be:  :O  *WTF*  From which planet did he come from?  What a looooser!!!!  When they close their eyes and just listen, they will hear a waterfall and suddenly be in paradise, birds singing and, hari charisma sings softly in the distance and …  Hmm. Pekka? Wake up?

-Where where we?

-What is my - Charisma? (Gene Simmons Solo album 1979)

Paul McCartney and his Höffner. Will I be able to make something similar in this form or similar design? It is both ugly and very good looking. Who will know and be the judge? ;) I always loved Beatles and always will and this bass screams THE BEATLES!!!

As I plan to make it half acoustic, I might make the box bigger, less round, all for the unplugged sound to be good, making holes at it, similar to cellos, a lot of tests are needed to not end up in chaos. How big will I need to make the bloody body or box?  IDK right now honestly. Making it round is hard, edgy easy. I choose edgy  :D

Well now let's talk about the details and quality!

I will study the Floyd Rose build in detail, the string bending arm mechanism either in a store or where ever I might find one ...

... take a lot of photos of the construction and make my own, combining wood and metal. This specific item will not be easy made.

I will also make a lock system to be able to lock the strings in the other end, the top of the neck and I will make it big and robust, almost like it will look clumsy, better that than it will break from the pressure  :D Validations and pressure tests will needed.

The area where the Floyd Rose bend arm will be, needs to be made very very robust, so the air space of the acoustic box will not have that area included, well not hollow, but go around the compact wooden area so the Floyd Rose will stay in place and be able to be mounted at all and also prevent the whole guitar from cracking and break by it self. A guitar string does have the power of 50 kg if I remember right, so the hallowed half acoustic box needs to be adapted to the tensions as it will take a year or so to build it and if it breaks, I will CRY and get extremely depressed for sure. Well it is easy to repair broken guitars anyway, so what?  ;)

I did find schematics for Ibanez tremolo arm

Here is the Schematic for the Floyd Rose Tremolo arm

So easy to make a guitar to sound False

I think this section is so important, it will have its own section and I might add info to it that pops up, during this journey as well. This info is vital to let the guitar sound good at all and not false.

Simple Frets Calculator online - Will get your neck just right.

The 3 mic's and the electronics?

I love the look and sound of Steve Vai's Ibanez guitars, he was forming and building this specific guitar together with staff from Ibanez so I do have that in mind as well as I love the Höffner as much as well. So what I will do is to make this guitar feel and sound like Steve Vai's guitar sound. That is the goal and if I unplug it, it will still sound like a western country guitar if I take it out in the wild west, into the vast void and like to play a western song there? Is this possible at all? I think so but we never know until this guitar is built, will we? It can also sound awful, without plugged into an amp or not, nothing but lots of  wasted hours for nothing? This is an unwalked area, an experiment, which makes me sooooo extremely excited really. So how will I manage to make it sound like Steve's stuff? Well it is not only his guitar that makes the sound as it is also his amp and effects, but if we focus on the guitar only, I do have a plan and it is to visit the guitar stores and ask to see the Steve Vai Ibanez guitar...

...and ask them if it would be possible to take a peek inside and take a photo? They can always say no and I will sort it out anyway in some way and it is to debate it with you or in different forums and ask Google again. I will use those mics, either buy the exact same ones or try to make my own copies of them,  and wire the magnetic cores myself and if I failed, I can always buy those original mics separate at some point and I can do that with any part I might fail to make but failure is really not an option and is out of the question as there is no limits in my tiny world and in my tiny head, there is no space for failures as everything is possible. I do try to convince myself that at least. (Dream on baby...)  ;)

History of Guitar Designs similar to Steve Vai

Blueprint or schematics of Steve Vai Ibanez guitar electronics and mic coils?

So I need to find a blueprint or schematics of the electric installation in that specific guitar or similar. I know they did spend almost 2 years to test it out, making adjustments, trying the new settings and so on, so even if I will make the 3 mics, volume controls and the mic switch to look exactly as Steve Vai's Ibanez, it might still sound different anyway. What did they adjust? I do not know, but I suspect the coil wiring itself, adjusting the thickness and the number of laps of copper wire or similar? Who knows? But I still need to speculate to figure it out really. So this will be a bl*** jigsaw puzzle for sure. I will be extremely happy if I find the final blueprint somewhere but I will google it and also ask for it in all music stores all over the Swedish West coast and all over the internet. I will make it sound exactly as the final guitar, no doubt, I hope...  How hard can it be honestly? Lots of guitar players try to figure out how Steve Vai makes his unique cool singing guitar sound. Not many will figure out how he is doing it. I did hear some that were close in some videos so I really need to investigate this, mainly though Steve Vai's own guitar lessons maybe? We must solve this for sure :D

Colors?

I will try to learn to use 2 different stains at the same surface, make them blend into each other, as one unit, making it red in the middle and light brown at the edges. I will waste a lot of plywood for the tests, until I learn to make a result that looks good and acceptable. The fret-board itself will be light brown and the neck head red. I don't know what will happen with the hue if the red and light brown mixes up between the areas. This is not a standard paint. You know when you mix yellow and blue that the result will be green. I do not know what happens when I mix stains. I made an example plate 1981 with different stains next to each other, but I do not recall if the borders between each hue did look good or not? It looked like a bloody mess if you ask me.  :D  I will try, google it, try again and continue until I master the hue technique before I try it on an instrument with more than 1 single hue. I can even make the wooden item to look awful,  if I would drop the wrong hues at the wrong surface by mistake, making it look sick like it has the plague or the measles. I need to think when I do it, so it might not be more complicated than that, really.

Rare hues?

The colors that I plan to use will be the same colors and hues on both the guitar and the drums by the way. I love those cool and original colors. Well original for music instruments it is, as I rarely have seen those colors used within the musical area, but more on boats and art items made in wood. I will show the hues in another section of this episode, as it will be vital for the whole immersion of how you will feel when you see this stuff. Well very ill I guess, but not me.

Links for wiring your own pickups and coils? I did find 2 promising sites to start with, and one of them has a link as well to anothr site. Lets take one step in a time and try to figure out the quality range as well. As they do write about that as well. But I still wanna try this, specially the guerrilla mic's

The video above is the one I will focus at now. A fender pickup is more aggressive then a Humbucker, and might fit better for fast and aggressive metal sounds?  He do not make the mic entirely from scratch, but dismantle the whole mic and rewires it and then we see the whole construction in detail that we can copy and remake easy peasy and we also see him solder the stuff back together and those things what I really wanna know more about for sure as i am not sure how each end inside those pickups are connected at the moment. best video for pickup making so far if you ask me so I put it here at the top.

Next best site might be:
Guitarattack - See page 12 - guerrilla attack sounds brutal?
I want a raw and brutal sound for this specific guitar anyway.
A wolf in sheep clothing? I do hope so...  :)

Make a guitar pickup - Looks simple and also a bit ugly  :D
Ugly is also good as i like ugly in this case ;)   No one will see it when the guitar is used on stage.

The final video will maybe take us through the whole process in making a microphone from scratch. I might look at both videos, and mix the result but the top video seems to cover single coil and the one below, more Gibson similar Humbucker style mic's?

I might find more if I am lucky?  ;) Not tonight though. But I do have enough links and videos right now. This will be fun to test. The big difference might be the diameter of the wire and the number of laps. I will keep an eye at such details to see if that changes the sound and also in which directions?

Buying the Dimarzio pickups are expensive, well for my budget. They cost between €80 - €150 which is money I do not have.

The Handle?

I guess I attache a handle from an old suitcase on the side of the guitar, to make it ugly but also easy to carry.  :D  I make that one from scratch too.

The Drums! What drums?

The other idea that made me sleepless during my 2 hour trying to take a nap was drums. If you read my previous blog post, Essay 01, I did mention analog traditional drums first and later I added digital drums as well, as I love analog drums no doubt and hate rubber pads as those just make my arms ache. If you wanna become an invalid, use rubber pads and then you cannot even scratch your girlfriends back nor yourself and I love to scratch...  Hmmm, Where was I?

Materials

Drums? Ahhh, welcome back. Another thing I like to hit with sticks beside drum skins is wood as it is so easy to make the whirling or whatever we can call fast drumming on a snare, also on wood, almost faster then we do on a real Snare so wood is a damn good base for this project. Loads of wood, as much as possible and as little metal as possible. Some fast playing percussion instruments are made of different kinds of wood, nothing else.

I also plan to buy and test building the frame and all stands from brush shafts and handles. They do not look robust but they are and cheap to buy and already cylindrical but will also see if I cannot get cylindrical 4m base materials even at a better price, as the base might need to have a bit thicker frame rows I guess. Only wood will be acceptable for all these items as that is the whole point and goal, make as much as possible in wood.

Forest - Anyone

Does anyone of you own a forest, where I can walk out with a Motor saw, cutting down trees for all these stuff?

The pad, What is a DDRUM, rubber, MECH or wood or anything else?

So the base of a single drum will be solid wood, 2 circles in slightly different diameters, glued together. The top of the pad will have a smaller diameter then the bottom half, for the screws? Which screws? Well the ones that will be attached to the drum skin ring, that will cover the drum skin? Did we not debate digital pads, Mechs or rubber? No, not really. The hitting surface will be a real drum skin and I will place a gigantic impact microphone under it, in the form of 2 bigger metal plates, connected to a cable that will connect to a drum synth, analog in, MIDI out. The DDRUM pad is built this way and I have not dismantled one in 25 years, so I forgot what they look like exactly under the skin as I only have a faint memory of how it really looked like. It is 1 or 2 parts of 20-30 cm big metal plates (Not needed) , as far as I can recall. Let's have a quick peek at google (that knows everything there is to know they say, Google that is):

When you hit this drum, it feels like hitting a real acoustic drum. The last years I did cheat training playing drums, it was on our drummers DDRUM’s we had in the 2 bands Apple Chapel and also in Mellow Yellow, our cover band and I trained a lot with our funky and groovy bass player and he always screamed:

-PEKKA, PLAY FASTER - FASTER, FASTER - Well bloody hell, faster or I walk away damn you lousy piece of shit!!!!  How did you end up behind the drums anyway?

Our former bass player was a calm and nice (piece of pure garbage and a mean shithead, panelist and a BS) and lovely person and a very good and talented bass player  ;)

He also sent 48V to my sampler, blowing up the motherboard and claimed he did not do it, so I had to pay €400 myself in repairs. So sweet. Did I love him?  ;)

-Sug på den Anders Eriksson

I became faster and tighter the more we did play together. It's one thing to spank the drums and it is another to play a cool fast groove, remaining relaxed while playing and stop thinking about what you are doing and enter the trance state. Going to other dimensions and mind while your body plays the drums.

Thanks Anders for you lovely support and heads up in this journey of slapping pads with sticks  :D  It helped me become a better drummer and musician. Playing fast and keeping a nice groove is extremely hard to do. He forced me to learn it, the hard way. We did have many ups and downs. The fastest Funky slap bass player I ever met in my whole life. If I can slap the bass in half speed even, I would be happy.  :O  Extreme players are not always easy to get along with as they are not only extreme in the way they play their music. To analyze why, we need to add a section about the human mind and psychology, which I can do after I made all the instruments in April the year 2349, if the world will not go under before that year that is or we just ended up in space all and everyone?

How does that drum look inside?

Well - Google has not been so helpful but we have to find out first about how we will be able to ask the right questions as otherwise we will get the wrong answers and wrong links. I did find the history of digital drums and drum machines, and drum synths for pads here as curious

(Pekka spends 5 hours searching and watching different videos and blogs about the sensors, scroll down for the final video that explains it all or follow my attempts to find it all out. I did it finally, figured it all out)

The history ot the digital drum

But that was not what we were looking for. Maybe this video will have the answers or will it force us to make new questions?

I take a break now and look at it. It is 20 min long so, see ye later…  ;)  I try to take screenshots from the video as well. I was on the right track about layers of different plates, in different materials to build the impact microphone or sensor. They call it a sandwich and the cheapest is bought on eBay for a single $ or a buck or coin or whatever he called it. Well that is 8 SEK right?  Expensive stuff, but I will make my variants a bit  larger than the tiny ones he shows in the beginning of this video anyway. Let us go back to the video as I stopped at 03:09

This sensor looks more pro then all others. Will it sound better? Validation needed + tests.

A cone covering the sensor? Why? What is the benefit?

I tried to Google the Cone and ended up with something else schematics of sensors instead. Over course at Univerity level but still cool pictures take by microscopes.  I might read it one cold day when it is raining? i save it for now at least so do not push that link if you do not wanna go nuts.

The cone? Will I find it? I go bananas. I only find pressure cones for fluid pipes and fluid controlling??  That is not applicable to drums at least. I need to ask prooes, if I meet one. I can also ask the guy in that video if I can find his address but hopefully he reads the comments om YouTube. lets find out.

I stop now at 06:37 and my comment now is that I really need to look up different designs of the completely different generations of different solutions, especially to find the one that is most sensible. A non sensible digital drum is the ones that Bill Bruford, Yes and Genesis and also King Crimson started to use as he was among the first drummers using that lousy garbage of pure shit, the first digital drums that saw the light of the sky first that had only one state or one single velocity -> MAX power. Let's listen to it in another tab or window, so pause the other video first and go back later or vice versa. I love Bill, no doubt as he is a unique drummer with a very odd style, never straight, always making his own rhythmic patterns, that makes you think, WTF is he doing. See them in any order, it doesn't matter or just skip this video as it only shows how a drum should not sound like:

In the other hand, when was Bill Bruford best? 3 years after the demo in Japan, A reunion of half the members of Yes, that they called ABWH, Anderson Bruford Wakeman and Howe made a live concert. Listen to it when you feel to relax for some time as it is very odd and cool music.  :)  He combines those lousy drums and real drums in this video in a cool way, to make the experience of the odd rhythmics more dynamic. The drum solo? Well it sounds odd, but it does look like he is hitting stuff randomly in this video, a lot as well so ut sometimes sounds like a child without rhythmics are playing if you close your eyes

Well the point is. The more sensible a digital pad is, the more different jumps or states it can send to the drum synth, the more realistic it sounds. You will never make the exact same hits on a drum ever, each hit will sound different then the other, even if it is in millions of micro-hertz and micro-Db, the velocity will differ as you will never hit the exact same spot twice with exact same force, which will affect the frequency in micro-hz some for sure. You can't hear it maybe but you can still feel it and music is 80% about feelings, if not more. This can only be done when you play on a real acoustic drum, but it could be done on a digital drum pad, making you forget that it is not realistic or no real sound, but made by a computer. Most give a shit anyway. :D  It is like some can hear the difference between a CD and a vinyl record, well I do not hear it but some claim they do hear it. Well it was funnier to listen to a vinyl record, no doubt, I do not know nor remember as I gave all mine away 1994. Maybe there is something missing when we listen to CD’s, DVD’s and digital sounds and recordings?  Is music still fun at all? YES IT IS, STOP Thinking about this now and go back to the video where they dismantle drums. So where were we? 06:37 right?

Stop the press - I finally found videos about how to make pads from scratch using almost no budget at all - almost :D Finally!!!!!

Well each video will differ from the other in both quality and budget. :D

The first video is made in Asia by a poor looking Asian, making the lowest budget pads you can ever imagine. He did buy the most simple and  cheapest impact mics, that is also all he needed. The rest is stuff you find in a kitchen and inside a wardrobe. The synth is self is excluded as that is a separate section I will cover later.

The next video might have a better solution? I have not seen it, just a couple of seconds so let's see where it will take us, shall we?

Well the principle was almost the same. Will we ever find a video that shows how to build the best and most sensible velocity pads?

This video shows how to build a whole set, all stages included. Very fun instructive video. They did use a lot of stuff from a junk backyard, for free it looks like at least :D

How to build a copy of the Roland pad is described here:

Click ••► Common tips about triggers pads and modules

Can we buy a Trigger sensor for less than €1 or around $1 - Yes we can.

No need to dismantle them which they all do in the videos above, well most of them do anyway. I will try this trigger later to see if it works the way I think it should work?

Click ••► Here is a better and more varied page for drum vibration sensors also for lowest price I seen so far. one for €0.30 or 30 cents or $0.30 or 3-4 SEK each? I also found sensors for volcanoes but I doubt they can feel a drum beat but they did look cool. Who knows?  ;D

Well if I think about it, ones again what the point of the cone covering the trigger really is? I get the feeling we do want the change in the air to be triggered more then the vibrations of the hardware, the skin and rings or the pads? I do not know really. In any case, the conclusion I make from watching all drums is still to isolate the triggers it seems. Between soft sandwich materials and so on? All this needs to be tested, mounting the sensor on different locations inside the drum and hit the drum with light and hard hits, listen and open it up. move the sensor around, isolate it, make new testes and see if I need to hit it differently? It seems more that it is more important to find a good spot for the trigger, more than which fabricate we use?  Interesting really. Needs to tested as well. Damn, those tests will take forever if I cannot get the right feeling smashing the drums?  ;)

Wood?

Why am I talking about wood so much? Well let's first ask ourselves, well I have to ask myself: Pekka, where do you plan to place your analog loud and natural good sounding drum set, if you would make one that is? Place? I do not have a clue as I cannot place it at my girlfriend's apartment as she is mad as she is at me after I changed her kitchen into a digital recording studio and I cannot put it at home either. My neighbors complain even if I play my acoustic guitar? A Hungarian gentleman used to knock at my door informing me that his wife is having a nervous breakdown listening to all noises I make and I do not give a shit honestly, but it does take some time to get back into the groove and mood after talking to that fool daily. If I would install an analog drum set at that apartment, I know I would lose my contract and get kicked out. So now only one option remains, if I do not get my own house isolated somewhere with no disturbing neighbors, or my own practice room where such a kit might be played without disturbing objects knocking on the door, before I start this project? Well then I make a real acoustic analog kit that is able to make 120 Db. If I do not have such an isolated place, I will make Digital drums instead. If I wanna buy a set today, the digital ones are also cheaper. If we would buy the drums, a good Analog acoustic sweet set or kit would cost €2500 of those I fell in love with but a more simple set can also be bought for €400 and want and the digital set I would love to have cost €360 and that is 8 times cheaper than the acoustic set I really love to buy. Let's take a look at it or both set even:

The Analog Acoustic set:

I lost that site, forgot where I saw those lovely €2500  drums but I would had peeked at one of these sets as a base at least:

I will find my dream drum set again if I plan to buy it for €2500, well the set I misplaced… Well the one I did forgot where it was. I have looked at a dozen different music companies online through Google at the same time, no wonder I am lost in space. Well let's forget about it.

Click ••► The Digital set: Alesis Nitro Drums!!! The base for my own design

I do love the way the drums are mounted on this digital Alesis set as I always have problems making my legs and knees to fit behind any drum set and this will allow me to make good space for my knees no matter where I will place any drum or high hat. The snare and High Hat are huge problems and when you manage to make them fit with my knees, we have to move the drums and are back at square one, where the hell will I put my legs now? Mission Impossible...  Well problem solved: Look at this photo:

It does look comfy and I can also use that set in my apartment as the only one that will complain, is that bloody fool that is married to that nervous wreck to a woman, I still do not care...  ;)  No one else will complain but if they do, I ignore them too until the house owner knocks on door. :D The thing is, no matter if I make analog traditional drum or digital, the way to mount them will be perfect in this frame anyway, so it will become my final solution for drum mounting and give lots of space for legs, knees, feet or whatever you can place under the drums. I really look forward to make the printout for it to start with before I make them  :D

How will we be able to see if it is an Alesis set I made or my own homemade set? I do want it to look homemade, as I will show off my skills as a woodworker and be proud of the result as well. If I paint it black or dark gray, you can't see the difference so I will not and I will not use traditional paint either, not the kind you use on metal, plastic, cement, stone or whatever…

So which substance(s) will I use to change the color of my wooden items?

I will use Stains and transparent see through paint when I color each item. So you can admire the natural patterns in the wood, that will make it look alive and magical.

The drums will be reddish, painted with a reddish stain and then covered in boat paint that will add a new dimension to them, make them look very specular and reflect light wherever it comes from like a rotating mirror globe on a disco dance floor. Well i will not add all those faces as I will make the drums cylindrical after all well you get the picture I guess. You will see the natural patterns of the wood and the wood itself will have clear borders between each year it did grow. Dark rings for winter, and light colors for summer. Hard woods lack that, so I will use Pine as much as possible as Pine really has the most viable and beautiful patterns, even if it is softer than Oak, Juniper and Beech. The corners in the frames will be made of harder wood sorts though and the big items, softer more good looking sorts. During 1984, I made a lot of items in teek but I did stop using it for 3 reasons. It is soon a very rare wooden sort from the rainforest and it is expensive and does not have viable patterns. When you stain it, it looks like plaster really so no carpenters ever paint it as they leave it to become gray by the rain and sun. It is a tree sort with natural protection against rain anyway, so it is extremely hard to crack and very common as deck material on many boats. Complete waste of my time and money really for finer art items. I did make a stereo panel or console in that material for my first car that had none.

Let's make a small comparison of what it might look like later on the surface, shall we?

This a a wooden boat:

I used to have a boat made in wood, not as fancy as the one in the photo as my boat did cost €500 to buy but a bloody hell to keep in good condition every year, well that's another story for another forum. The boat in the picture is stained in 2 different colors and painted with transparent boat paint. It is a luxury boat with huge and fast engine, that will cost at least 10 times what my boat did cost me as mine had a small tiny engine, but still a racer wheel to steer that boat with, that looked fancy at least  :D  Well it was a beautiful boat really.

A dark teflon pan.

The question is now? Do you see the difference between the boat and the pan? If not, wash your glasses will you or get new ones  :D

The frame will have a slight light brown stain and be covered later with the transparent boat paint as well.

The corner sections in the frame will be DarkBrown, so dark that they will look as black, stained in a color called BlackBrown and then painted in transparent Boat paint as well.

The boat paint I have in my mind is a bit special as it has a slight brownish touch, which adds a new dimension to the surface in some way. I cannot explain it differently but I have compared it to other similar transparent paints 35 years ago and I loved this one best, 10 times more than the 2nd best looking honestly.

What's the point with all this no sense now then? Well the Alesis digital drum set looks like the teflon pan and my set, built in the same way will look like that fancy boat.  :D

Per-Erik -> The nutcase...  ;)   (Can you browse the Archipelago with that drum set as well?) That was mean...  :/  Well I love our nice west coast Archipelago outside Gothenburg, no doubt, so maybe I should try? Who knows? Not in the winter though, but in the summer in case I will drop the stuff into the ocean trying to reach tem and have to swim to the shore with them on my back? I do hate cold water...   :)  It needs to be validated.

I forgot to mention the hardest part and that is: How will I make the drums sound different from a wooden table? Good question and let's solve it, shall we? I spent a lot of time thinking this over before I went up from my so-called failed nap and made some coffee. The easiest and fastest way is to buy the cheapest drum synth there is, that has 8 analog earplug inputs and MIDI out/in and analog out as well. The analog out will be pointless, but hey... I might use it in emergencies or the house caught fire to wake everyone up. All those analog inputs and MIDI out is a requirement as I will use the sounds available in my DAWs and drum simulators in my computer as some of them SOUNDS Amazing, like SSD5 s one example:

or the drum replacer that is hidden in Cakewalk: (Do not read the BS at that page as Sonar is no longer supported, only Cakewalk is and the Drum Replacer is hidden in Cakewalk when you Download it for free from http://www.cakewalk.com/) Here we see it exactly at 209 seconds into this video and the link is set to 207 seconds and it is shown a half second, so pay attention and rewind 5s if you miss it or edit the link in the end, change the timer from 207 to 200 or something else.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNX2TzX4nAs&t=207s

but I would prefer to build the drum synth from scratch and I do not know if there are any blueprints available for this or not but I will look tomorrow as I am too tired now even to type this BS but I do anyway. Well the requirement is still

Drum Synth Requirements

1. 8 Analog in - Midi out

2. Sounds, any sound if available at all

3. Inbuilt sampler with high quality sounds, in the same quality as SSD5 or Drum replacer or the BEST and highest quality sounded drum VST ever made. Nothing else does not matter and it is possible as everything is possible.  :D

I do hope I will be able to do all stages, 1-3 but in case it is impossible to find such blueprints or it get too expensive, stage 1-2 will do, in case I cannot just buy a fitting drum synth cheap that has all requirements already? Well that is so long into the future that I will not care until the physical drums are made and first then I will solve the sound problem  :D In any case, I can just have the drums on a pedestal and open a bloody museum and set up a big sign: See but do not touch the junk on the pedestal, it is very brittle and breaks extremely easily!!!!

I think I will have fun anyway honestly. It is the journey, not the goal that is the funniest part,  someone did say or write ones I think. Maybe they are right? ;)  Long journey that ends up in chaos and failures only in the worst scenario.  :D

I do debate all this, the drums and requirements at a electronic forum

If you read it all, and think this is all BS and that I wasted your time, well why did you not stop reading after the 3 first lines??  ;)  Not my problem really, if you like it or not. This will be among the funniest stauff I ever made. *runs away and terrorize evryones that might have tools and workshops available and blueprints or whatever - Runs in a circle, green side up, green side up, keeps running forever*

-Where did he go?  Have anyone seen Pekka the runner? :O

-I have not seen him for 3 weeks now? (Someone replied)  :/

-Well who cares where he went, as long as it is nice and more quiet here now at least...  ;)  (A third reply)  -He needs to get his bad and lousy condition up a bit anyway, he needs some workout...  ;)

Dialogue with my Girlfriend about the current plans?

So it is time to tell my Girlfriend about the drums and also about the new 4th guitar but how will I do that and still make her not to freak out? She does think 1 guitar is enough, as she does not want me to have any guitars here at all she says. Maybe I can start by debating the suitable colors of the drums? I do not know, I have to start the dialog at some end I think. Okay, hold your breath, here we go.

My Girlfriend just came into the kitchen earlier so I asked her if she thinks or has any thoughts or objections about, if the color red will go well together with brown and also some black? She looked at me for a long time, looking like a big question mark, like this :O and she finally asked after some time thinking:

-What do you mean? What crazy ideas have you come up with this time?

-The Drums, I said

-What drums she asked and looked at me like a bloody granite block of stone, like she wanted to smash my face in or explode like a box of dynamites?

-Well the drums I will make or at least plan to make if possible?

-DRUMS??  Are you nuts? You will not bring any drums to this house or I throw you and all your ridiculous toys out of the window!!!!

-Well, we could always put them in the kitchen?

-Where in the kitchen If I may ask such a silly question?

-Well we can put the table and chairs outside at the altan or put them in the staircase and then we could have breakfast, dinner and also supper together with our lovely neighbors?

...  She went completely nuts for 15 min, almost threw me out, called me names I never heard before and told me after 20 min.

-You know I hate the b*** neighbors. I refuse to eat or speak with those buffoons. You do not bring one single more item into my flat I tell you. FINAL, I warn you!!!

-Well we can put the table at the altan then maybe??

*silence*

-Did anyone see Pekka around lately (someone asks far far far away, in another galaxy, in another time dimension, somewhere else, in the void)

-I think he passed away a couple of weeks ago really, some accident I guess?  I do not know honestly?

—---------------------------------------

It might be best to maybe just place the drums in my apartment after all maybe? What do you think? Or?  :o *hides himself from his own angry and crazy nutcase to nervous neighbor, that is about to crack very very soon*

hmmm...  Hard choices...  ;)   *starts to play drums at his knees, some funky grooves and relax and dreams away*
